KORNATI ISLANDS

      KORNATI ISLANDS

Rugged National Park With Dramatic Coves And Landscapes

The Kornati Islands are often described as a "nautical paradise," a sparse and celestial fleet of stone anchored in the deepest sapphire waters of the Adriatic. This archipelago, the densest in the Mediterranean, consists of 89 islands, islets, and reefs that seem to have been scattered by a divine hand—a sentiment famously captured by George Bernard Shaw, who remarked that God created them out of "tears, stars, and breath." Its beauty is defined by a striking, almost lunar austerity, where silver-grey limestone hills roll into hidden turquoise bays, offering a silence so profound it feels like a physical presence.

The most dramatic feature of the park is its "crowns"—massive, vertical cliffs that plunge up to 90 meters into the sea. These jagged white walls stand as silent sentinels against the open ocean, creating a breathtaking contrast between the sun-bleached rock and the dark, vibrant blue of the water below. While the islands may appear barren from a distance, they are crisscrossed by over 300 kilometers of intricate dry-stone walls, hand-built by generations of laborers to protect small olive groves and grazing sheep, creating a delicate lace-like pattern across the rugged terrain.

Beneath the surface, the Kornati transform from a stone desert into a riot of color and life. The sea here is exceptionally clear, allowing sunlight to dance across underwater meadows of Posidonia seagrass and illuminate red coral forests and ancient shipwrecks. It is a sanctuary where bottlenose dolphins often leap through the wake of passing sailboats and loggerhead turtles glide through protected coves. Whether you are standing atop the Metlina peak for a panoramic view of the "stone pearls" or snorkeling in the crystalline waters of Lojena beach, the archipelago offers a rare sense of untouched isolation and timelessness.

Kornati is a place when you left the civilization behind, an isolated place when one feels one and closest to the nature.
