You might have spotted a few people this summer gliding through the water on small boards that look like a mini version of a windsurf and then suddenly they are lifted above the water! These mini surf boards are called hydrofoil or e-Foil boards. At the end of the fin you will find a small device that looks like an airplane. It has two wings and this is the basic principle of a hydrofoil. The Hydrofoil board glides through the water at an upward angle which accelerates water downward. Think about the America’s Cup catamarans – they are lifted from water and they fly above the water. This is due to Newton’s 3rd law, the reaction of the water shooting downward creates an upward force that lifts the hydrofoil boards out of the water. The same ‘lift’ enables the planes to fly. A local company from Split, Croatia has produced an electric hydrofoil board. Easy to use, the hydrofoil board has a rechargeable battery that averages between 60 and 90 minutes of ride time and can produce the maximum speed of 35km per hour and it is easily operated by the wireless hand controller. No previous surfing experience required. The boars offer non-slip surface and a rider can stand on his feet, sit or lie-down.

Today hydrofoil boards are one of the newest, and hottest selling gadgets in the water sports industry. The hydrofoil boards are available to rent on selected Sail Dalmatia's yachts and gulets.
