" The Flying Fortress" B 17 on Vis Island is the best-preserved World War II airplane wreck worldwide.

During World War II, the island of Vis played a significant role as the main location for Josip Broz Tito, leader of the Yugoslav Partisans. Prior to that, the island was occupied by Italian forces but was later liberated by the Partisans with the assistance of the Allies. In April 1944, a small secret landing strip was constructed on the island, primarily for emergency landings of USAF bombers. This landing strip is the main reason why there are numerous aircraft wrecks around Vis.

The "Flying Fortress" wreck, located near the coast of Vis, is particularly notable. It is considered one of the best-preserved World War II airplane wrecks worldwide. Due to its depth and challenging dive conditions, the wreck has been remarkably well-preserved, likened to museum specimens. A visit to the Flying Fortress and many other diving sites indicated on the map below are arranged as a part of a yacht charter with Sail Dalmatia.
